Presence in the Strait
Common winter visitor to estuaries and reservoirs. Nonexistent during the ‘60s; in the ‘70s few winter visitors were seen (<10 birds), chiefly during migration. Numbers have been increasing and they have become regular and common during winter since the middle of the ‘90s (>1000 birds).
Identification
Large surface-diving bird. Black except for white areas on head. Juveniles are dark brown above with mostly white underparts.
Movements
Peaks in November and March. The first usually arrive in September and the last leave at the beginning of April.
