Presence in the Strait
Scarce resident in country areas (<25 pairs). Numbers are falling, with a drop of >50% in the last twenty years. The subspecies C. c. tingitanus, from the African side, has bred at Ceuta since 1991.
Identification
The largest of the corvids. Wedgeshaped tail, large head and very heavy bill. In flight, slow, deep, elastic wing-beats, pointedlooking wings. Deep and repetitive call “grrac”. The subspecies tingitanus is slightly smaller, has a shorter bill and is highly gregarious. The largest concentration was of 250 birds, observed on 10.03.93 at Mirador de Benzú (Ceuta).
Movements
Sedentary with post-breeding dispersal.
