Presence in the Strait

Common resident of grassland, scrub and farmlands. More abundant during migration.

Identification

Generally appears brown. In flight, black wings and tail, pale chestnut rump and white outer tail feathers. Males have a red patch on their breasts and foreheads, more evident in the breeding season than in winter. Females and juveniles are very similar, the latter more heavily streaked overall.

Movements

Prenuptial peaks in 1st hf. April and postnuptial in 2nd hf. October.
