Presence in the Strait
Scarce winter visitor to coastal areas (<50).
Identification
The smallest of the Calidris. Very similar to the Sanderling but smaller, with a shorter bill and less visible wing bars in flight. Rufous-orange summer plumage with white “V” on mantle.
Movements
Rarely seen during prenuptial migration; chiefly on postnuptial migration, with peaks in 1st hf. September.
