Presence in the Strait

Scarce winter visitor to wet and coastal areas (<40).

Identification

Slightly larger than the Black-winged Stilt with white patches on its back, bluish legs and black, upturned bill. In flight, blackwhite wing pattern. Juveniles display vaguely defined pattern with brownish-grey areas on back.

Movements

Prenuptial migration peaks in 1st hf. April, two postnuptial migration peaks: in 2nd hf. August for local populations and 2nd hf. September for more Northerly birds.

Germany (3), Spain (2), France (2), Holland (2) and Belgium (1).
