Presence in the Strait
Rare winter visitor found on the coasts of the Bay of Algeciras between November and February. Breeding ceased from the middle of the last Century when La Janda dried out; at that time it was the most abundant of the group.
Identification
Bill tiny, uptilted to a sharp point. In winter black on face reaches below its red eye, contrasting somewhat with white round Podicipedidae ad.W ad.E Zampullín Común juv. ad.W juv. ad.E Somormujo Lavanco ad.E Zampullín Cuellinegro ad.W earcoverts and on neck.
Movements
Migration is inconspicuous. There have been records of single birds outside the Bay in January, February, April and September.
