Presence in the Strait

Common summer visitor to abandoned buildings and rocky shelters. African species that appeared on the Iberian Peninsula towards the end of the 19th Century. The first record for the area was in May 1920 but the first nest was not located until 1938 to the N of San Roque.

Identification

Similar to a Swallow but easier to identify in flight due to its pale rufous rump, pale, streaked underparts and bluishblack upperparts with rusty-brown nape. Nests are built in the shape of a cup with an entrance tunnel similar to a bottle (see White-rumped Swift).

Movements

Peaks in 1st hf. April and 2nd hf. September and October.
