Presence in the Strait

Abundant resident on grazing land.

Identification

Small and gregarious heron. In winter adults are white with dark legs, while the breeding plumage shows orange-buff areas and dusky-red legs. Juveniles have black legs.

Movements

Prenuptial peak in the 1st hf. March and postnuptial in 1st hf. October, with important postgenerative movements from July, although these movements may start towards the end of May, as is the case of a chick ringed on 18.05.87 at Barbate and controlled on 21.06.87 in Morocco (34 days).

Ring recoveries

Birds born in the area and controlled in Morocco (93), in Spain (3), and chick ringed in the colony at Tajo de Barbate on 17.05.86 was controlled on 19.07.87 in Stockholm (Sweden), 3,119 Km. away.
