Abundant resident in wooded areas. Two species can be found: C. caeruleus on the Iberian Peninsula side and C. ultramarinus on the African side.
Identification
Small; yellow underparts with a dark central streak. The species caeruleus has a greenish back and blue wings with a narrow white wing-bar; dark blue eye stripe, throat and collar, glossy blue crown and white ear-coverts. In juveniles, blue is replaced by greenish tones, with yellowish head and throat. The species ultramarinus has a blue mantle, blue-black stripes on the head and dark blue crown.
Déplacements
Neither subspecies crosses the Strait. The Iberian birds move from highland forests to valley and coastal areas between September and January, with peaks in October.
